2.  Forum of Women in the Environmental Field Networking Meeting

3.  EXCO Class "Climate, Development and Energy:  Renewing Our Future"

This summer the EXCO class "Climate, Development, and Energy: Renewing Our Future" will be offered.

The class will be hosted at the Friends Meeting House at 1725 Grand Ave. on Mondays and Wednesdays starting Wednesday, June 4 through Monday, July 14, from 7-9 p.m.  This is the third semester that Timothy DenHerder-Thomas, the facilitator, has been teaching this course, which allows participants to investigate and discuss the broad range of ecological, economic, political, and cultural dimensions of global warming, the energy crisis, and most of all how we can engage in a movement for climate solutions.

The class is free and open to the public.  Community members, Macalester staff, and high school students as well as Macalester students are vital to making this work.

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND:  DREAM (Directing through Recreation, Education, Adventure and Mentoring) is a unique organization that partners college students with children living in affordable housing neighborhoods in the state of Vermont.  We achieve our mission of empowering children and neighborhoods by blending best practices from mentoring and community development models.  Mentors and their mentees take part in weekly trips to college campuses, adventure trips around the country, and spend summer and winter at Camp DREAM – our residential camp.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:  DREAM's Associate Executive Director (AED) is responsible for the overall picture of internal organizational health.  This position combines human resources work with internal evaluations systems and ties it to the day-to-day support and communication on which these practices draw their strength and purpose.  The AED is responsible for ensuring integrated leadership development within DREAM's Central Office that builds leadership flexibility across the organization.  The AED will work with DREAM's Executive Director and Team Leaders to set goals that will drive the organization to achieve its mission and future vision.

THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT WILL POSESS:

  • Minimum education experience: Bachelor's Degree.
  • Significant work experience in a mission driven, growth oriented, organization.
  • Experience with various models of leadership and facilitation.
  • Experience with goal setting and/or evaluations work.
  • Ability to organize and inspire others to achieve goals.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. (verbal, written, email)
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate occasional night and weekend commitments.
  • Creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit.

5.  Jobs with Grassroots Campaigns, Inc.

Grassroots Campaigns, Inc. (GCI) is a national political consulting firm specializing in building grassroots support for causes, political candidates, public interest campaigns, and non-profit fundraising operations. They are currently interviewing potential staff for our campaigns. Grassroots Campaigns’ current and past clients include Environmental Action, MoveOn.org, the Democratic National Committee, the ACLU, and the League of Conservation Voters.  They are hiring for the following positions:

Position:  Citizen Outreach Director

Citizen Outreach Directors and Assistant Directors manage grassroots fundraising offices. They work with a team of other directors to recruit, train, and work with a staff of up to 100 paid canvassers to build support for the 2008 elections and a wide range of nonprofit organizations.

Position:  Field Organizer

Field Organizers work in targeted Congressional districts and major metropolitan areas around the country. They will recruit, train, and work with volunteers to build the support needed to win on critical issues and get good candidates elected. In fall 2008 Field Organizers will help run one of the largest get-out-the-vote drives in the country.

For all positions:

Qualifications:  Sound communication and motivational skills, strong desire for political change, and work ethic are essential. We are looking for people who have a strong leadership background, and who are ready to take on a lot of responsibility. Previous field organizing or canvass experience is a plus, but not a prerequisite.

Salary/Benefits:  Annual salary begins at $24,000, and increases commensurate with experience. Staff may opt into our health care plan. Student loan assistance repayment program offered.

6.  Sierra Student Coalition RE-AMP Student Representatives

The Sierra Student Coalition (SSC), the student-run branch of the Sierra Club, is looking to support talented student organizers to serve as Student Representatives to RE-AMP during 2008-2009. RE-AMP is a seven-state network of nonprofits and foundations, striving for Midwest leadership in clean energy by reducing global warming pollutants 80 percent by 2030 and supporting collaboration across state boundaries.  RE-AMP Student Representatives will be members on one of five RE-AMP working groups and will serve as a point of contact for students working on policy issues in the Midwest and for RE-AMP
partner organizations working with students. The working groups include:

  • Clean Up Coal
  • Transportation (which includes biofuels)
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Clean Energy
  • Global Warming Solutions (climate policies).

With support from staff from the SSC, Will Steger Foundation and Energy Action Coalition partners, RE-AMP Student Representatives will work to engage students across the Midwest in the development of state and regional climate policies.

RE-AMP Student Representatives will be expected to:

  • Participate in regular working group conference calls
  • Attend in-person working group meetings (usually once a year)
  • Attend Annual RE-AMP meeting
  • Provide communication between students, Energy Action Coalition Staff and RE-AMP partner organizations on strategy and upcoming opportunities

$500 travel scholarships are available to cover the costs of travel for the working group and annual meetings.  The five students will be supported by Sierra Club, Sierra Student Coalition, Will Steger Foundation and Energy Action Coalition staff throughout the
year.

Qualifications:  Positions are intended for students currently enrolled in college and will require involvement over the summer.  Students must live or attend school in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois or Michigan. Applicants should have s basic level of familiarity with the issues covered by the working groups, but a passion to learn and communicate about these issues is just as important.  RE-AMP Student Representatives will be selected based on ability to communicate complex issues, understanding of student networks and organizing, and geographic diversity.
