Brief Course Description

Writing Requirement Description

Writing instruction at Macalester aims to ensure that students appreciate the importance of excellent academic writing and that they learn to plan, draft, write, and revise a college-level essay, including: 1) how to develop a thesis, 2) how to organize an essay, 3) how to present an academic argument, 4) how to use evidence, 5) how to use and cite sources using a standard academic documentation style, and 6) how to improve their prose.

Course Approval Criteria

Writing courses must include three or more separate writing assignments or one larger research or term paper. The writing assignment(s) should total at least 4500 words (about 18 double-spaced pages). At least one of the assignments must be an academic argument, and at least one assignment must undergo revision based on faculty feedback. This feedback should address, as needed: content (e.g., development of argument, use of evidence, consideration of audience), form (e.g., organization, paragraphing, transitions), style (e.g., clarity, conciseness, diction), and mechanics (e.g., grammar, punctuation, spelling).

How many writing assignments will be required in this course?

Please describe briefly or provide examples of all major writing assignments for this course.
