The Heating Plant staff is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the campus mechanical and electrical systems, including boilers for heating, chillers and air conditioners for cooling and the automation system that controls and manages them.
Steam/Hot Water
The Heating Plant supplies steam and hot water to heat 26 campus buildings and 11 college and privately owned houses. Plant operations for heating typically run from September through May.
Chilled Water
Constructed in 1996-97, the subterranean Chiller Plant lies just north of the Art building and supplies chilled water to cool 13 campus buildings using centrifugal chillers and an ice storage system.
Energy Management/Building Automation
From the operator's booth deep inside the heating plant, personnel monitor, operate and control heating and cooling systems utilizing a sophisticated combination of hardware and software to optimize the efficiency of equipment that is linked to the system.
Daily Operations
During the heating season four operators, under the guidance of the Chief Engineer, operate and maintain the boilers on a 24 hour basis. Over summer, they assist the 6 maintenance engineers that take care of the rest of the campus' electrical, mechanical, and plumbing needs including, but not limited to:
- Campus food service equipment
- Scientific and lab equipment
- Swimming pool maintenance
- Housekeeping equipment repair
- Certain off-campus retail stores and houses
- Appliance management (Stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, air conditioners, etc)
- Preventive maintenance of critical equipment
They also ensure that HVAC equipment is operating at peak efficiency while providing good indoor air quality and a safe environment for staff, faculty and students.
