Received January 2008 from Helen Baker, class

After graduating from Macalester in 2004, I worked as an English
Assistant in Guadeloupe in the French West Indies. I was placed
at the IUFM (Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres).
My job was mainly to have conversation classes with the student
teachers. I lived in the dormitory at the IUFM, so had the opportunity
to get to know student teachers from Guadeloupe, Martinque, St.
Martin, Guyana and the Métropole (mainland France). I traveled
to Trinidad and Tobago with my students and also had the opportunity
to visit 10 other islands while working in Guadeloupe.
Following my year in Guadeloupe, I completed
an MSc in Demography and Health at the London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
In June 2007, I started my two years as a Community
Health AIDS Prevention Peace Corps volunteer in Togo. I am posted
in Dapaong, which is the regional capital of the Savanes region
of Togo. I work with the Togolese Red Cross, but also have been
helping with a women’s weaving cooperative on their business
and marketing skills. Some highlights of my service so far have
been helping with relief work with the Red Cross following the
flooding in the Savanes region and biking the length of Togo to
help raise money for girls scholarships. .
