Track position in French and Francophone Studies
The department of French and Francophone Studies
is entering an exciting period of revitalization and expansion,
with several positions to be filled in the next few years. We are
inviting applications for a tenure-track position starting Fall
2010.
Rank: Open, with preference for Advanced
Assistant, Associate, or Full Professorship
Primary Area of specialization: The History and
Development of the Novel
The department is seeking candidates whose strong
teaching skills and innovative research will significantly contribute
to its renewal and to the broadening of the French and Francophone
curriculum. We are especially interested in candidates with the
ability to make their respective fields of expertise relevant to
students in a liberal arts environment. Candidates should have expertise
in literature and culture, with a primary focus on one or more of
the following fields: the history and development of the Novel,
with solid background in intellectual history, cultural, social
or political theory, as connected to the Novel, colonial narratives,
emergence of new discourses in literature and media (medical, economic,
artistic, legal, new mappings of the world), representations of
technology in the novel (photography, painting, dance, etc.), travel
narratives, the urbanization of the novel, etc. Secondary area of
specialization desirable: North American or European francophone
literature and culture outside of France, poetry, theatre, visual
culture.
Through the department of French and Francophone
studies, there are opportunities to collaborate actively with several
interdisciplinary programs and departments such as the Women’s,
Gender and Sexuality Studies, Humanities, Media, and Cultural Studies,
Human Rights and Humanitarianism concentration, and International
Studies.
Candidates’ scholarship and teaching should
be consistent with the mission of Macalester College and its emphasis
on academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism, and
civic engagement. Candidates should have a strong teaching record.
Interest in teaching for the general curriculum and courses about
France in English for the college at large are also highly desirable.
Normal teaching responsibilities include a balance
of language instruction and more advanced courses as well as participation
in co-curricular activities (the department has a dynamic French
Lecture Series and programs activities at the French house and in
the Twin Cities). Native or near-native proficiency in French as
well as excellence in teaching and in scholarship are required.
Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to liberal arts education.
Send letter of application, C.V., graduate school
transcripts if possible, three letters of recommendation, statement
of teaching philosophy in the liberal arts education, description
of teaching and research interests and writing sample or preprints/reprints
to: Joëlle Vitiello, Associate Professor and Chair, Department
of French and Francophone Studies, Macalester College, 1600 Grand
Avenue, Saint Paul, MN, 55105. For best consideration, complete
applications should be received by November 1, 2009.
Macalester College is a highly selective, private
liberal arts college in the vibrant Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan
area, with a population of approximately three million people and
home to numerous colleges and universities, including the University
of Minnesota. Macalester’s diverse student body comprises

and over 75 countries. The College is proud of its long-standing,
mission-driven commitment to outstanding academic excellence with
a special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service
to society. We are especially interested in applicants dedicated
to the pursuit of excellence in both teaching and research/creative
