Peter
Vantine, Visiting Instructor, is a Ph.D. candidate in French at
the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is completing his
dissertation on “La métatextualité et les figures
d’artistes dans les romans des Goncourt”. His interest
in metatextuality, within and beyond the 19th century, concerns
texts that engage the reader through critical, self-conscious commentary
on themselves—by drawing attention to the artifice of fiction,
to the creation and reception of a text, and to the text’s
relationship to a given genre as well as to the culture as a whole.
His work examines the ties between literature and the visual and
print cultures of the 19th century. He is also interested in English
and Italian literatures from the same period, and in their different
interactions with French literature.
