Zhang Dali

Image and Revision in New Chinese Photography

November 4 - December 10, 2006

Opening Reception: Friday, November 3, 2006

7:00 to 9:00 pm

This exhibition introduces the latest project of Zhang Dali, a Beijing based artist who has shown his work in museums and galleries throughout Asia, Europe and the United States. Focusing on the juxtaposition of Mao era photographs in their manipulated and pre-manipulated forms, Zhang Dali’s work relates issues of censorship and propaganda typically associated with authoritarian regimes to the role of artistic originality, political license and the constructed “truth” of photographic images in today’s global media.

This Macalester College Art Gallery exhibition has been co-curated by Winston Kyan, Assistant Professor of Art History at Macalester College and David A. Parker, artist and independent curator. Previously, these works have been exhibited at the Beijing Commune in Beijing, China and the Gwangju Bienniale in Gwangju, South Korea. They made their North American debut at the Walsh Gallery in Chicago in Zhang Dali: A Second History, curated by Wu Hung, the Harrie H. Vanderstappen Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago.
