In partnership with the City of Saint Paul Second Shift Initiative and the Saint Paul Public School District, the Spring 2007 Advanced Geographic Information Systems class embarked on a research project to assess accessibility to after-school programs for K-12 public school students in the City of Saint Paul. This cooperative effort represents the first step in a long-term research project that actively engages Geography students at Macalester College in an ongoing research initiative. The final report, After-School Programs in Saint Paul: Availability and Access, identifies the spatial relationships between the locations of after-school programs and student demographics in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This document represents the first assessment of existing and recently collected information about Saint Paul public school students and their access to after-school programs. It is the result of work done between February and May of 2007 by thirteen students enrolled in the Advanced Geographic Information Systems class. Assisting the city’s Second Shift Initiative, the specific task was to identify the gaps in after-school opportunities by mapping public school students, current programs, and measurements of access across the city. |
