Pick at least one of these assignments to post on the discussion bulletin board starting Monday, March 26th. After you post one of your works, please provide your classmates with comments on their projects. The following tasks are structured so you have three options on each of the items you were asked to read and consider. (Please note: all short passages should be NO MORE THAN 600 WORDS.)

Overview of Residential Zones of Minneapolis and St. Paul

Create an image using a camera or other media that captures the basic elements of one of the types of residential districts described in this passage. Feel free to write a short caption for your image.

Write a short passage on the way these categories match or differ from the place you live OR how you think they would work as a classification system for suburban neighborhoods.

Based on the map depicting the residential districts of the Twin Cities, write a short passage on how the size and shape of residential districts might effect their stability.

St. Anthony Park

Create an image using a camera or other media that captures the basic elements of one of the public spaces in St. Anthony Park. Feel free to write a short caption for the image.

Write a short passage on the way people living in St. Anthony Park might have endeavored to portray their community as a small town.

Based on the map depicting the Cleveland Plan for St. Anthony Park, speculate (in a short passage) on what it might be like to live in St. Anthony Park if Cleveland's plan had been accomplished.

The Lake District

Create an image using a camera or other media that captures the basic elements of the new commercial space in Uptown. In your caption discuss how this new development enhances the sense of place in the area.

Write a short passage discussing the impact of STYLE on the Lake District or other places you know well.

Based on the topographic map from the early 20th Century, describe (in a short passage) the landscape as it would appear today if the lakes had not been dredged.

Swede Hollow

Create an image using a camera or other media that illustrates the transition of ethnic groups on the east side.

Write a short passage discussing the meaning of Northwestern European ethnicity in the early years of 21st Century.

What does the photography of the Hamm Mansion, Brewery and houses in Swede Hollow tell us about the social relationships and capitalism in the early years of the 20th Century in St. Paul? (Discuss in a short passage.)

Three River Neighborhoods

Create an image using a camera or other media that illustrates the impact of ethnicity on the cityscape in St. Paul or another city you know well.

Write a short passage discussing how new arrivals transition from being "others" to being one of us (or members of their communities).

Using the various photos and views of the West Side Flats and Little Italy, speculate (in a short passage) on how the location of these communities contributed to the sense of identity held by their residents.

Grand Avenue and Surrounding Neighborhoods

Create an image using a camera or other media that illustrates the impact of commodification on Grand Avenue or other street you know well.

Write a short passage discussing the likelihood that Grand Avenue and other commercial strips will lose their retail functions, as has been the experience of downtown St. Paul.

Using the map of 1892 and various photos and views of the Historic Hill District, discuss (in a short passage) the ways Grand Avenue might have developed if Summit Avenue had continued to follow the crest of the bluff line and not been redirected due west to the Mississippi.

Four Nineteenth Century Residential Districts

Create an image using a camera or other media that illustrates the how either Merriam Park, Groveland Park or Macalester Park has maintained elements of their late 19th century suburban design. Feel free to discuss your image in the caption. Be sure to provide us with its location.

Write a short passage discussing the positive and negative effects of colleges on neighborhoods.
