On April 4, 2008, the State Geographic Bee Finals will once again be hosted by the Geography Department at Macalester College (St. Paul, MN). Students from around the state will compete for the state bee championship and a chance to represent Minnesota in Washington, D.C., at the National Geographic Bee .

Students competing in the state finals are local Geographic Bee winners who took a written test in their schools earlier this winter. With their parents and teachers looking on, 100 fourth through eighth graders will compete in the preliminary round, answering a variety of world geography questions from a panel of judges. The ten students with the top scores will advance to the final round.

Schools with students in grades 4-8 in the United States are eligible to participate in this annual competition. Principals can find out how to register their schools by going to the National Geographic Bee website. Schools that register by the deadline to conduct a school level Bee, receive all contest materials and information they need. The school contest, with a minimum of six students participating, produced one school winner. That one school Bee winner then takes a qualifying test to determine up to the top 100 scoring students in each state who are invited to the state level Bees. Check with your school to see if they participate in this annual event.

2009 Geography Bee will take place on Friday, April 3, 2009!
