MAPPING THE GREAT MIGRATION

Directions:  Using an atlas, draw and label the following places and actions on an outline map of the U.S.

1.      Label the following states.  To save space on the map, you might want to use the postal abbreviation.

Maryland   (MD)      Tennessee (TN)     Alabama (AL)     Georgia (GA)   Minnesota (MN)

Florida (FL)    Louisiana ( LA)   Missouri  (MO)    Pennsylvania (PA)   Wisconsin  (WI)

Illinois (IL)    Michigan  (MI)      Massachusetts (MA)     Ohio (OH)     New York (NY)

Virginia (VI)   Kentucky (KY)       West Virginia (WV)   North Carolina  (NC)  South Carolina (SC)

2.      Label the following cities:

New Orleans               Mobile              Birmingham               Atlanta             Jacksonville

Savannah                    Memphis                     St. Louis               Kansas City

Milwaukee                   Minneapolis                 St. Paul            Chicago                      Detroit

Pittsburgh                    Cleveland                    Baltimore                   Washington, D.C.

Philadelpia                   New York                 Boston

3.      Regions of “North” and “South”:

A.      In large letters, write the word “North” across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

B.     In large letters, write the word “South” across Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.

C.     Draw a thick line between the two regions, following the northern borders of Arkansas, Tennessee, and Virginia

4.      Railroads

Using themap “Major railroad routes in 1935,”  draw the main rail lines between the cities you have labeled.  (these routes would have been about the same since 1900 and throughout the Great Migration).

5.      Migration Patterns

A.  Draw 2 or 3 thick arrows over the states you have labeled going from South to North.  This shows that many African-Americans migrated from the South to northern cities.

B.     Draw 2 or 3 smaller arrows going from North to South, to show that some people migrated in the opposite direction – but not as many!

6.  At the top of your paper, label your map “The Great Migration.”
