PROGRAM

WHAT: One-day workshop focused on Geographic Technologies including Internet map and image servers, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and remote sensing. Presentations and displays to feature free and low-cost options for integrating geotechnologies into the K-12 curriculum. Sessions designed for both beginning and intermediate users. 5 full computer labs.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Geography, Social Studies, Science, Environmental Studies, Agriculture, Technology and other educators who would like to use computer maps, aerial photos, and satellite imagery to engage their students in standards based, authentic learning at a local and global scale.
KEYNOTE ADDRESS: “Supporting Emergency Response and Humanitarian Relief Efforts with GIS”. Jay Meehl, St. Mary’s University and a GIS Corps volunteer, will explore why geotechnology is essential for the coordination of humanitarian work, disaster response, rescue operations, and recovery efforts. He will include a first-hand account of how GIS was used during tsunami relief operations in Sumatra , Indonesia .
