URBAN GEOGRAPHY:
CONCEPTS & SKILLS
WHAT: The Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education will offer a two-week summer institute for teachers [Grades 4-12] interested in implementing the newly established state graduation requirements and helping to create web-based curriculum on the portion of the new standards that focus on the geography of cities in Minnesota and the rest of the world in combination with the essential skills of geography.
The two-week summer work period will consist of lectures, tutorials and field research in the Twin Cities and Northern Minnesota in late June and early July of 2005. Specifically, the experience will consist of three braided strands: (1) content lectures by local experts, (2) use of technology for web-based instruction, and (3) tutorials on the production and use of a variety of curriculum materials.
Note: Applicants must be available to take a three- day field trip to northern Minnesota from July 6 - 8.
WHO SHOULD APPLY:
Teachers in grades 4-12 who are teaching geography and present evidence of a serious interest in enhancing their mastery of geography and its teaching. They must also present evidence of previous curriculum development experience, how these new lessons might fit into their curriculum, and provide proof of support from their administrator for conducting in-service sharing sessions in their home schools and districts.
