Dr. David Lanegran, Co-Director

Lanegran is the Macalester College Geography Department Chair and Coordinator of the Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education (MAGE). He has served as a director and/or faculty in approximately forty-eight summer institutes since 1985.
Dr. JoAnn Trygestad, Co-Director

Trygestad is an expert in middle school pedagogy and has worked extensively in social science and reading. In addition, she has also developed an expertise in authentic pedagogy and assessment.

Helen Hazen, Visiting Assistant Professor

Hazen's research interests are focused on human interactions with the environment. One of her main interests is medical geography, and particularly how the natural environment influences health and disease. Helen has always had a particular interest in teaching, and has developed classes on the Geography of Health and Healthcare, the Regional Geography of Latin America, Population Geography, and the Regional Geography of Oceania, as well as a seminar related to senior undergraduate research.

Laura Smith, Assistant Professor

Smith teaches courses at Macalester College in urban economic geography, North America and quantitative methods. She also teaches an urban GIS seminar that connects the class with a community project. Her recent research projects have focused on urban development and transportation and on issues of American Indian law and land use.

Birgit Muehlenhaus, GIS Lecturer

Mühlenhaus is the GIS Lab Instructor and teaches the laboratory sections for introductory and advanced GIS at Macalester College. She previously worked as an intern in Barcelona , Spain , in the Geography Education Outreach division at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington DC , taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in Wrocław , Poland , and was a Teaching Assistant for Cartography and Intro to GIS at the Pennsylvania State University in State College .  Before coming to Macalester, Birgit was the GIS Manager at a local non-profit organization addressing land-use issues in Minnesota .
