Please join us for a grand journey this summer! This is a special workshop and field trip for MAGErs who want to learn more about Lake Superior , tall ships, navigation, north shore geology, and PIRATES! This hands-on adventure begins at noon on Aug. 3, and ends on the evening of Aug. 4. During our two days together, we will learn about GeoTrekking and EarthCaching, take on the History GeoCache Challenge at Jay Cooke State Park , explore the Duluth Maritime Museum , enjoy a behind the scenes tour of the Great Lakes Aquarium, and more! In the evening, we will have special pirate training, including fencing practice and learning about period costuming and stage makeup for pirate re-enactment.

Overnight accommodations will be in dorm suites at the College of St Scholastica , then rise and shine early the next morning, ready to board ship! This will not be any old cruise on the lake, as we will actually be trained in as the ships crew, then set sail along the North Shore to Thunder Bay and back. This will be an opportunity to learn traditional sailing and navigation tech niques, as well as a chance to “play pirate” as we will also be re-enacting pirate scenes for a MAGE/ Public TV documentary on the life and times of Irish pirate Grace O'Malley.

Participants will need to bring their own sack lunch for Sunday afternoon, but Sunday dinner, and Monday breakfast and lunch will be included in the registration fee. Lodging, program fees, and museum admission will also be covered. You will need to bring your own pirate attire, however, and anyone who not properly dressed will be made to walk the plank!

As would be expected, this adventure will conclude with an official induction ceremony for to welcome new members into the elite “Loyal Order of the MAGErs. “ Previously -inducted elders should be prepared for you-know-what!
