1-Day Firewise Communities Project Workshop

Sponsored by the Minnesota DNR Firewise Program
and the Minnesota Alliance for Geographic Education

For Educators Interested in an Introduction to the Firewise Communities Project  AND   A “Refresher” for Educators Who Attended Firewise Teacher Trainings in the summers of 2004, 2005 and 2006.

 
“Firewise Communities: Reducing the Risk of Wildfire” is a standards-based, collaborative school project in which students use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to identify local wildfire risk and educate their community about wildfire risk reduction.

Coffee, rolls and lunch provided.

Substitute teacher pay available to first 25 registrants.
  • Explore the “Firewise Communities: Reducing the Risk of Wildfire” curriculum and learn about Firewise Teacher Training opportunities.
  • See examples of Firewise school projects.
  • Hands-on GIS and GPS training with the Firewise Laptop and GPS Receiver Lab available to your school.
  • Meet Ken Pekarek, under contract to Firewise Minnesota to provide technical assistance to Firewise teachers via e-mail, phone or in person.
  • Consult with Firewise staff Tom Eiber, BJ Glesener, Pegg Julson, Sara Damon and Mary Mohr-Scinocca.
  • Offer feedback on the Firewise Communities Project.
