Hinckley has a fascinating story of urban functions and rapid development following corridors of circulation to once-isolated, rural areas. Both in the late nineteenth century and again in the years since the Grand Casino opened in 1992, excellent transportation access and a unique resource—first lumber and now legalized on-reservation gambling—combined to make Hinckley into a boomtown. Whether today’s economic and population growth is sustainable over the long run—or whether the current boom will be followed by a period of stagnation and decline like the long period that followed the 1894 fire—nobody is certain. But Hinckley’s unique story of the continuity of two separate periods of booming population and economic development because of a location along major transportation corridors and unique resources makes Hinckley an exciting place to visit and study. I hope that you have enjoyed your look at Hinckley.
