Northern Suburbs - Early Auto Era

First Significant Developments, Highway 10 and 169

In the early 1930s, US highway 169, connecting Kansas City to Canada, passed through Anoka. This created a direct high speed connection between Anoka and Minneapolis. Highway 10, connecting Anoka and the southern edge of the northern suburbs to St. Paul, would become a main commuter connection between the Twin Cities and out-state. Constructed in the early 1920s, by 1935 traffic volume on Highway 10 exceeded safe capacity necessitating its conversion to a “superhighway.”

 

    Highways 169 and 10 favored growth in the suburbs along the paths of the red arrows below..
   
   

Headline from the August 7th, 1935 edition of the Anoka Harold. Article highlights the expansion of Highway 10 necessitated by the high volume of traffic and disproportionate number of accidents.
