During the Early Auto Era, suburbs along the southern and western edge of the area, such as Fridley and Coon Rapids, experienced growth unmatched by any other municipality in the area. By 1940 in Anoka County, Columbia Heights almost matched the City of Anoka in population. Increasingly the area was gaining urban population and retaining its small rural population. |

Map of Expansion by Era - by the end of the Early Auto Era, the Post World War II boom was set to begin. It would be the largest suburban expansion the area had seen. Far removed Anoka would be swallowed by new development. Highway expansions would funnel new residents to the area on Highway 169, a widened Highway 10, and soon, Interstate 35. |
