Housing in the Early Auto Era
This 1925 suburban scene from Columbia Heights illustrates the style of suburban housing common in the Early Auto Era. Building occurred on small lots on perpendicularly plotted streets. Like suburbanization today, most of the houses were built in the same style. However, the standard housing size was much less than today’s norm. These orderly streets are still part of the current urban landscape. Below, a street in Blaine near Coon Rapids shows the current look of the Early Auto Era housing. The trees have matured and an attached garage has been added to the original one and a half story home. |

Of the current housing in Anoka County, 2.6% were built in the Early Auto Era. The map below shows their locations. Building was concentrated in Anoka and Columbia Heights. The cities of Fridley and Coon Rapids were just beginning to develop. |
