COURSE GOALS
To speak, write, read, and understand German in controlled situations and to continue the study of German culture.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance and Participation
Given your goal of communicative proficiency, regular attendance and preparation are essential. You need to come prepared (i.e., having completed your homework assignment), and you must actively participate in class. You are given points for class participation, and missing class means forfeiting those points. If illness or emergencies keep you out of class, contact me by phone or email BEFORE class.
When you do need to miss a class, you are expected to confer with your classmates to review what was covered during your absence. In other words, you are responsible for everything that was said or done in class, regardless of whether you were present at the time. More than 4 absences – including any absences from the lab (see below) – will result in a half-grade reduction in your final grade, and more than 8 absences will result in a failing grade. The only exceptions to this rule are medical and family emergencies that have been cleared with the Dean of Students.
Conversation Session
In addition to our three meetings per week, you are required to attend a fourth session -- the conversation hour -- in which you will work on conversation skills in small, more informal groups with a native speaker of German. These conversation sessions are an integral part of this course, and you will be evaluated on your active participation. If you have not signed up for a lab session, you must do so immediately. Conversation sessions begin the first week of the semester. Missed conversation sessions cannot be made up, although in emergency cases you may be able to arrange with your conversation group leader to attend a different session on a one-time basis. Absences in the conversation hour count as absences in the course as a whole (see above for consequences!).
Co-Curricular Activities
In order to encourage you to explore a variety of German-related activities/events beyond your immediate course, you are required to attend two German Studies Department activities in the course of the semester. You can find out what activities are available by going to the department events calendar. All department events are open to you. Please inform me by email when you attend a co-curricular activity.

Homework
You will be assigned homework from the main textbook and from the Arbeitsbuch (workbook). The answers to most exercises are in the back of the two books. You should always check your answers with these answer keys. If you find you are making mistakes and don’t understand why, bring it up at the beginning of the next class – you’ll be doing your classmates a favor, since you are certainly not the only one having difficulty – or, if you prefer, in my office hours. It is essential to your progress that unclear points be cleared up early on. It is best to do the exercises on the day they are assigned; they are scheduled to solidify material presented in the previous class session.
Textbook Assignments The assignments will include sections of the purple grammar pages ("Strukturen"); you should study these very carefully until you have understood and learned the material, not just read through them. You will also be assigned exercises ("Übungen") in the purple pages, and on occasion other tasks from the main pages of the textbook. Some of these are marked "einreichen" (to be turned in) on the syllabus; these are to be turned in at the beginning of class on the day they are due.
Workbook Assignments
Do the exercises in blue or black ink, then check your answers using the answer key in the back of the workbook, correcting your mistakes in red ink. Draw a red line in the margin next to any exercises for which there are no answers in the key (I will correct these myself). For the listening comprehension exercises "Hörverständnis" in the workbook, you will need to work with the audio files on Moodle. Go to http://moodle.macalester.edu and then log on with your username and password. Once you reach the appropriate course page, use the Kontakte link at the top of the page to view the links for each chapter. Click your way through to the right audio file. Workbook exercises are collected on test days. Tear the respective pages out of the workbook and turn them in.
Quizzes
Most class sessions will begin with a 2-5 minute quiz based on the homework from the textbook (purple pages) that is due on that day.

EVALUATION
Because language learning involves a variety of activities, you will be evalutated on all aspects of your work. Your course work will be weighted as follows:

Activity
Percentage
Participation (class)
20%
Participation (conversation)
10%
Homework
10%
Quizzes based on homework
10%
Tests
30%
Final (written)
15%
Final (oral)
5%

IMPORTANT: A C- or better is necessary for continuing into German 203.

ASSISTANCE OUTSIDE OF CLASS
Please feel free to see me during office hours or to schedule an appointment. Dropping by my office without an appointment is ill-advised since you may miss me or catch me in preparation for a course. Phone calls or e-mail are always welcome.

STATEMENT ON ACADEMIC HONESTY
The German Department encourages you to employ all of the useful resources available for studying and improving your German. A good print dictionary or online dictionary, German spell checking (available on all of the HRC computers and provided with every copy of Microsoft Word with Proofing Tools), the library, the Internet, department tutors, native speakers, advanced students of German on campus, and of course, your professors, are all excellent resources for you. Be advised, however, that in writing your German-language essays and papers or preparing oral presentations, the usual academic honesty policies apply (cf. the Student Handbook http://www.macalester.edu/deanofstudents/handbook/). Plagiarism, defined simply and broadly as presenting someone else's language and ideas as your own, is strictly prohibited. This means that you may not include any phrases or sentences taken from a web site, an article or a book without citing them appropriately (i.e. using quotation marks and either a parenthetical citation or a footnote); nor may you present language edited by a native speaker or an advanced student of German as your own. This means that although it is appropriate to get help form anyone - especially your professor! - on discrete vocabulary or the occasional knotty grammatical problem, it is not appropriate to have someone go through an essay and find and correct errors if you are going to submit the essay as your own. Such a practice is not good for your learning and it is not honest. If you have any questions about appropriate or inappropriate resources, talk to your professor.

The syllabus gives a plan of the semester and may be changed as need arises. Any changes will be announced in class. Again, when you miss a class, always check with classmates about possible changes to the syllabus.
