course goals

To speak, write, read, and understand German in controlled situations and to begin the study of German culture.

course pace

This course is an accelerated, intensive course, in which we cover a year of college-level German in one semester. The only way for us to cover this much material in such a short time is if you do a majority of the work outside of class. Depending on your background, expect to spend two to three hours working on your own for every one hour of class time.

There will be three make-up sessions to replace missed sessions when I will be away at a conference. We will try to find a time that is convenient for everyone, probably on Thursdays. However, it is essential that you attend these sessions, so be prepared to rearrange your schedule if need be.

attendance and participation

The only way to learn a language is to use the language. Given your goals of good communicative proficiency, regular attendance and preparation are essential. Class time will be designed for active learning and practice. You will work with other students in class on such tasks as interviewing, reporting, describing, narrating, and so forth. To use the class time effectively, you must actively participate in activities. ‘Regular attendance’ means coming to class all the time. You are given points for class participation, and missing class means forfeiting these points. If illness or emergencies keep you out of class, contact your instructor by phone or e-mail.

When you do need to miss a class, you are expected to confer with your classmates to review what was covered during your absence and to find out about any announcements such as changes to the syllabus. In other words, you are responsible for everything that was said or done in class, regardless of whether you were present at the time. (“I don’t think I was there when you said that” won’t fly.) More than 5 absences – including any absences from the lab (see below) – will result in a half-grade reduction to your final grade; more than 7 in a full-grade reduction; and more than 9 in a failing grade. The only exceptions to this rule are medical and family emergencies that have been cleared with the Dean of Students.

homework

You will be assigned homework from the main textbook and from the Arbeitsbuch (Arbeitsbuch). The answers to most exercises are in the back of the two books. You should always check your answers with these answer keys. If you find you are making mistakes and don’t understand why, bring it up at the beginning of the next class – you’ll be doing your classmates a favor, since you are certainly not the only one having difficulty – or, if you prefer, in my office hours. It is essential to your progress that unclear points be cleared up early on. So speak up!

It is best to do the exercises on the day they are assigned; they are scheduled to solidify material presented in the previous class session.

textbook

assignments

The assignments will include sections of the purple grammar pages (“Strukturen”); you should study these very carefully until you have understood and learned the material, not just read through them. You will also be assigned Übungen in the purple pages, and on occasion other tasks from the main pages of the textbook. Some of these are marked “einzureichen” (to be turned in) on the syllabus; these are to be turned in at the beginning of class on the day they are due.

workbook

assignments

Do the exercises in blue or black ink, then check your answers using the answer key in the back of the Arbeitsbuch, correcting your mistakes in red ink. Draw a red line in the margin next to any exercises for which there are no answers in the key (I will correct these myself).

For the Hörverständnisse (listening comprehension exercises) in the Workbook, you will need to work with the audio files in the Humanities Resource Center or HRC, on the first floor of Humanities. You can access the files either through the computers in the HRC or (they tell me) from any computer on campus with audio capability. Go to

www.macalester.edu/hrc/, then click on “Digital Resources.” Then click your way through to the right audio file.

Workbook exercises are collected on every day after a test day. Tear the respective pages out of the book and turn them in.

quizzes

Most class sessions will begin with a 2-5 minute quiz based on the homework from the textbook (purple pages) that is due on that day.

conversation hour

In addition to our regular three meetings a week, you are required to attend a mandatory fourth session – the conversation hour – in which you will work on conversation skills in small, more informal groups with a native speaker of German. If you have not signed up for a lab session, you must do so during the first week of classes. Conversation sessions begin the second week of the semester. Missed conversation sessions cannot be made up, although in emergency cases you may be able to arrange with your conversation group leader to attend a different session on a one-time basis. Absences in the conversation hour count as absences in the course as a whole (see above for consequences!).

co-curricular

activities

In order to encourage you to explore a variety of German-related activities and events beyond your immediate course, you are required to attend two German Studies Department activities in the course of the semester. You can find out what activities are available by going to the department events calendar at http://www.macalester.edu/~german/ departmentcalender.html. ALL department events are open to you. Please inform me by email when you attend a co-curricular activity.

grade break-down

Class participation & preparedness: 20 points (32 classes @ 5/8 points)

Conversation hour: 14 points

Homework: 10 points

Quizzes based on homework: 12 points

Tests: 28 points (7 tests @ 4 points)

Final exam: 12 points

Co-curricular activities: 4 points

Total: 100 points

IMPORTANT: A “0” IN ANY ONE AREA WILL RESULT IN A FULL-GRADE REDUCTION. A “0” IN ANY TWO AREAS WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE.

assistance outside of class

Please feel free to see me during office hours about any questions and concerns you have about your German course. If you would like to see me at a time other than my office hours, I'll be happy to make an appointment. Dropping by my office without an appointment or a phone call is ill-advised, since you may miss me or catch me in preparation for another course. Phone calls and email are always welcome.

syllabus

The syllabus gives a plan of the semester and may be altered as the need arises. Changes will be announced in class.
