COURSE GOALS
This course is designed to help students increase their proficiency in German language while emphasizing authentic cultural contexts. The textbook, Anders gedacht, is divided into ten, content-based Einheiten, which offer authentic cultural and literary readings, images and films for discussion and analysis. As the introduction to the textbook states: "Anders gedacht means thinking differently, and thinking differently about the German language and the cultures of German-speaking countries is exactly what this textbook hopes to encourage. We encourage you to think differently—to change your point of view so as to engage in cross-cultural interpretation, analysis, and comparison" (Anders gedacht xvi). One of the main goals of this textbook is to transform a traditional "language course" into a more engaging, interdisciplinary "content course".
Through exposure to a variety of texts and text types, students develop oral and written proficiency in description and narration and develop tools and discourse strategies for culturally authentic interaction with native speakers. Classes focus on an active use of the language, such as discussions, partner work, group projects and creative role-playing. Feature films and and audio clips are regularly integrated into the course to increase students’ listening comprehension. Through regular essay assignments, students expand their vocabulary and apply increasingly diverse writing techniques. Among our goals will be improved communication and reading skills, an expanded vocabulary, more accurate and diverse written expression, as well as greater insight into cultural features of the German-speaking world. Please note: In order to go on to German 204, you need to earn a C- or better in this course!

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance and Participation
The only way to learn a language is to use the language. Given your goal of communicative proficiency, regular attendance and preparation are essential. Class time is designed for active learning: we will discuss the texts you have prepared and you will work with other students on such tasks as interviewing, reporting, describing, narrating and so forth. To use class time effectively, you need to come prepared (i.e., having completed your homework assignments), and you must actively participate in activities.
Since part of your grade is based on class participation, it is in your interest not to miss class. More than 4 absences, excused or not, will result in a half-grade reduction to your final grade; more than 8 absences will result in a failing grade. When you do need to miss a class, contact me before class and confer with your classmates to review what was discussed during your absence and to find out about any announcements such as changes to the syllabus.
Conversation Session
In addition to our three meetings per week, you are required to attend a fourth session - the conversation hour - in which you will work on conversation skills in small groups with one of our teaching assistants. These conversation sessions are an integral part of this course, and you will be evaluated on your active participation. Missed conversation sessions cannot be made up.
Co-Curricular Activities
In order to encourage you to explore a variety of German-related activities/events beyond your immediate course, you are required to attend two German Studies Department (or other German Studies related) activities in the course of the semester. You can find out what activities are available by going to the department events calender. All department events are open to you. Please inform me when you attend a co-curricular activity.

Textbook and Workbook/Lab Manual
Daily homework assignments will typically include working through readings and exercises in the textbook as well as in the Übungsbuch. There are several sections in the Übungsbuch: Schriftliche Übungen (pp. 3-267), Hörübungen (pp. 271-314), Grammar Explanations (pp. 317-384), Deutsch-englisches Glossar (pp. 387-407). You must complete the exercises as indicated on the syllabus and submit your Übungsbuch for evaluation on the day of the chapter test. The audio files necessary to complete your assignments are available on Moodle.
Since the grammar explanations in the textbook are in German, you might want to refer to the grammar explanations in the Übungsbuch (which are in English). The syllabus indicates the appropriate sections.

Essays
During the course of the semester you will write two essays, each of which will require three drafts. We will prepare for these essays in class. Essays will be one to two pages in length, and must be typed (double-spaced) and spell-checked. When you turn in your essay, you should also turn in all the prewriting exercises, as well as any additional preparation work (vocab lists, drafts) you did on your own. That way, I will be able to give you better feedback. In additon, you will also write several short essays. These essays, one to two paragraphs long, are based on assignments in the textbook or workbook.

Tests
There will be four chapter tests (at the end of chapters 1-4) and a final exam, consisting of a written and an oral part, which will cover the entire semester, but stress the last chapter.

EVALUATION
Because language learning involves a wide variety of activities, you will be evaluated for every aspect of your work. Your course work will be weighted as follows:
Activity
Percentage
Participation (class)
15%
Participation (conversation)
10%
4 Chapter Tests
20%

ASSISTANCE OUTSIDE OF CLASS
Please feel free to see me during office hours or to schedule an appointment. Dropping by my office without an appointment is ill-advised since you may miss me or catch me in preparation for a course. Phone calls or e-mail are always welcome.

STATEMENT ON ACADEMIC HONESTY
The German Department encourages you to employ all of the useful resources available for studying and improving your German. A good print dicitionary or online dictionary, German spellchecking (available on all of the HRC computers and provided with every copy of Microsoft Word with Proofing Tools), the library, the Internet, department tutors, native speakers, advanced students of German on campus, and of course, your professors, are all excellent resources for you. Be advised, however, that in writing your German-language essays and papers or preparing oral presentations, the usual academic honesty policies apply. Plagiarism, defined simply and broadly as presenting someone else's language and ideas as your own, is strictly prohibited. This means that you may not include any phrases or sentences taken from a website, an article or a book without citing them appropriately (i.e. using quotation marks and either a parenthetical citation or a footnote); nor may you present language edited by a native speaker or an advanced student of German as your own. This means that although it is appropriate to get help form anyone - especially your professor! - on discrete vocabulary or the occasional knotty grammatical problem, it is not appropriate to have someone go through an essay and find and correct errors if you are going to submit the essay as your own. Such a practice is not good for your learning and it is not honest. If you have any questions about appropriate or inappropriate resources, talk to your professor.
