COURSE GOALS |
The goal of the course is to orient students to the Macalester Study Abroad Program in Berlin and Vienna and to prepare them for a successful immersion experience in Germany and Austria. We will analyze competing constructions of (national) identity and belonging articulated in (contemporary) Germany and Austria. We will focus on the roles history and culture play in the formation of German/Austrian identity and explore how the political and social changes in the past six decades affected conceptions of Germans’/Austrians’ sense of self by examining the -often contradictory- images of “German/Austrian-ness” in a variety of sources: feature films, literature, architecture, and events like the 2006 soccer world cup and the “Mozart-Jahr”. |

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES |
Aside
from preparing for and participating in class regularly, you are
expected to give two short presentations, write and revise a short paper (four pages) on a relevant
topic of your own choosing in consultation with me. Here are the

Since part of your grade is based on class participation, it is in your interest not to miss class. More than 4 absences, excused or not, will result in a half-grade reduction to your final grade; more than 8 absences will result in a failing grade. When you do need to miss a class, please confer with your classmates to review what was discussed during your absence and to find out about any announcements such as changes to the syllabus. |
EVALUATION |
In
calculating your grade, your work in this course will be weighted as
follows: Class participation 25% Presentations: 15% First draft of research paper 25% Final draft 35%. |
