Placement in German

In order to register for a German course at Macalester, all students who have had 1 year or more of German instruction (or 6 months within the last year) must take an on-line placement test to determine their placement.

This is a short test, lasting no more than 30 minutes for most students, and at the end of the exam you will receive a score and your suggested German course based on that score. Specific information on the exam (address, required password) can be obtained from Brenda Piatz in the Office of Academic Programs (piatz@macalester.edu).

In order to confirm placement in German 204 or 305, or to confirm fulfillment of the language requirement in German, students with the appropriate placement scores must complete a brief writing sample and oral interview in the German Studies Department. For information on this placement, on fulfilling the language requirement in German, or anything else related to placement, contact Professor Rachael Huener in German Studies: huener@macalester.edu / Humanities 211B
