Part I
(January - February): Berlin, Germany
The Berlin part of the program is aimed at getting students' German
in shape for university-level courses in Vienna as they get to know Germany.
Students study intensive German at the famous Goethe Institute, where
they are individually placed in a 4-credit class at an appropriate linguistic level.
Instruction is solely in German, and students will often find that German is the only
language they have in common with fellow students from Asia, Eastern Europe,
Africa or Latin America. The Goethe Institute is located in the historical center of the city, Berlin Mitte, one of the most interesting quarters of the new Berlin, where a mixture of galeries, small theaters, movie theaters, restaurants, bars und cafés create an attractive and lively atmosphere. While living in Berlin, students experience a traditional German form of student living, Untermiete, that is, they rent a room in a private home. Part II
(March - June): Vienna, Austria
Vienna is not only the capital of modern-day Austria, but was historically
the center of the Holy Roman Empire as well as of the Austro-Hungarian
monarchy in the nineteenth century. It has been the hub of artistic, musical
and intellectual activity for centuries. Austria has been officially neutral
since 1955, and Vienna has developed into an important international center
for United Nations activities. With Austria's entry into the European
Community in 1994, the country has once again become a major player on
the European scene. But what makes this city "Vienna" can scarcely
be put into words; it is visual--a city that demands you look up, lest
you miss a spectacular building; it is acoustic--home of everything from
the Vienna Philharmonic to the Vienna Boys' Choir to the late rock star Falco;
it is culinary--wander along the mile-long Naschmarkt (literally:
"snacking market") and you'll know what we mean. Whether you're a "high"
culture vulture or into underground punk, Vienna's offerings are inexhaustible! |
