Why Choose the Macalester German Study Away Program?
- Academic
strength: A six-month program of serious study, conducted entirely in
German, that yields students with a high proficiency in German and with cultural
sophistication.
- Learn
by Comparing: Our two-part program is your chance to live in Germany
and Austria (no, they're not the same!), to get to know two major cosmopolitan centers, to experience a family stay and
dorm life, to sample Europe's vastly different educational system.
- Academic
Range: Curricular offerings include an eight-week intensive German language course at the prestigious Goethe Institute in Berlin, two program-specific courses on culture, cultural politics, and history, and two courses in disciplines of the student's
own choosing at the University of Vienna.
- Success
and Longevity: We have three decades experience running the program. Over 50 program alumni have gone on to win prestigious Fulbright Fellowships for study or teaching in Austria or Germany.
- Not just
Work: We leave time for exploration and travel; trips to Prague and Budapest, two major Eastern European metropolises, are part of the program.
- Mentorship:
A Macalester faculty member directs the Vienna portion of the program.
- "Real-Life" experience: An internship offers a different perspective on life and work in Europe.

Did You Know
that...
- ... Berlin has three large opera houses, four free opera ensembles, a brand new musical theater, eight symphony and ten chamber orchestras, and more than 800 choirs?
- ... that
you can still see a 1.3 kilometer-long section of the original Berlin Wall?
- ... England's
Diana and Argentina's Evita have an Austrian rival--the adulated Empress
Sissy? Visit her work-out room (which scandalized 19th century Vienna)!
- ... you
can visit Vienna's underground canalization system if you take The Third
Man Walking Tour (seeing the sites of the famous Orson Welles movie
about post-war Vienna)?
- ... there's
a building in Vienna whose architect shot himself because he forgot
the toilets?
- ... Vienna
has the only Burial Museum in the world (where you can see the re-usable
coffin in which Mozart was buried)?
- ... that
you can rent a 21-speed bike from the Vienna train station and spend
all day exploring the Danube valley?
