Brian
C. Rosenberg
President, Office
of the President Web Site
B.A., Cornell University; M.A. and Ph.D., Columbia University
Brian Rosenberg is the 16th president of Macalester College. Prior
to becoming president, Rosenberg was the dean of the faculty and
an English professor at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., a
position he held since 1998. Rosenberg believes in the importance
of the liberal arts college, referring to it as "a uniquely
American institution." These colleges, according to Rosenberg,
"have emphasized breadth and flexibility rather than narrow
specialization, remaining, for more than two centuries, a central
tenet of American political thought and educational philosophy."
Rosenberg can also talk about higher education in general, its future,
value and cost. A scholar on Charles Dickens, Rosenberg has written
numerous articles on the Victorian author and other subjects as
well as two books, Mary Lee Settle's Beulah Quintet: The Price of
Freedom (1991) and Little Dorrit's Shadows: Character and Contradiction
in Dickens (1996). He was elected to the board of trustees of The
Dickens Society in 2000. A native of New York City, Rosenberg received
his B.A. degree from Cornell University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in
English from Columbia University.
Rosenberg has been at Macalester since 2003.
