Introduction

At its inception, Macalester was founded upon a dual dream: on the one hand, to encourage students to develop themselves through rigorous study and critical self-reflection; on the other, to educate students for the condition of freedom and the vocation of leadership. This dream was reflected and embodied in the pioneering works and lives of Edward Duffield Neill and James Wallace, two of the College's most significant founders and builders. Consistent with this founding impulse, we recommend that the College create a new Institute for Global Studies and Citizenship. Our vision is to create a single, well-supported institutional unit with the following mission:

To encourage, promote and support rigorous learning that prepares students for lives as effective and ethical “global citizen-leaders”; innovative scholarship that enriches the public and academic discourse on important questions of global significance; and meaningful service that enhances such learning and/or scholarship while enriching the communities within which Macalester is embedded.
