The Transition to the New Structure
We recommend that the new Institute be officially launched no later than Spring 2006.
We propose that, once the Institute is launched, relevant staff and faculty be asked to review carefully the existing programs within their respective areas and re-orient these programs to make them consistent with the new mission. This may involve continuing existing programs unchanged, adapting these programs to the new mission, or discontinuing certain programs completely. We recognize that new programs can only be initiated as and when appropriate resources are made available.
We recommend that the units comprising the new Institute be co-located in a single building that embodies and reflects the mission of global citizenship (in an urban context). We recognize that this will require a substantial investment on the part of the College. Nevertheless, we believe that such an investment would pay substantial practical and symbolic dividends in the long run and we urge the College leadership to consider making such an investment at the earliest possible opportunity.
Finally, we recommend that the process of integrating the units
that will comprise the new Institute be carried
out at a measured and sustainable pace. These units have distinctive
cultures, operating procedures, etc. and must be given sufficient
time to forge a common institutional ethos and identity that supports
the work of the Institute.
