Isabelle Chan '06
Eden Prairie, Minn.
International Studies, Political Science
As an intern at the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, Isabelle
Chan educated students and recent immigrants on deportation and
immigration law and tracked relevant legislation. She tutored local
junior high school students and, through the Emerging Scholars program,
she mentored first-year Mac students making the transition to college
academics. In internships with St. Paul's Center for Victims of
Torture and Confederación Empresarial de Alicante in Spain,
Isabelle used her knowledge of French, Cambodian and Spanish to
interview and translate. She is an activist in the areas of human
rights and human trafficking and an organizer of the first Macalester
Symposium on Human Trafficking.
Derrick
Fernando '06
Colombo, Sri Lanka
Economics, Accounting Concentration
Derrick Fernando possesses many of the skills highly valued in the
business community and uses them to further the work of business,
nonprofits and Macalester itself. He has interned at five locations:
GMAC-RFC (financial services), Good Things (a local small business),
the Minnesota Trade Office, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis
and D & A Enterprises in Sri Lanka. As student coordinator/supervisor
at the International Student Program Office, Derrick served as a
tax tutor for international students and worked on developing the
International Student Handbook. Following graduation, he is joining
LarsonAllen CPAs, Consultants, and Advisors and preparing for his
CPA exam.
Jessica Hawkinson '08
Wallingford, Penn.
Political Science, International Studies
Although only midway through her Macalester career, Jessica Hawkinson
is very much engaged in the college and surrounding communities.
She is active in Mac Protestants and a member of the growing organization
SIFE, Students in Free Enterprise. SIFE is developing curriculum
for teaching basic financial skills to adult Hmong immigrants with
limited knowledge of English or of written Hmong. Through independent
study tutorials,
Jessica has explored globalization and the European Union as a model
toward global governance. Her plans for 2006-07 include fall study
abroad at the London School of Oriental and African Studies and
spring semester in Maastricht, Netherlands.
Ryan Baugh '06
Decatur, Ga.
Geography, Environmental Studies
As a first-year student, Ryan Baugh participated in Lives of Commitment
(LOC) of Macalester's Lilly Foundation Project for Work, Ethics
and Vocation. Through LOC, Ryan helped English Learning Center students
read and discuss current events. He has been active in Mac Protestants,
the political party organization Mac Greens, and in reviving MacBike,
which offers a bike sharing program. Ryan studied in South Africa
with the environmental studies program. A delegate to a Kyoto peace
conference, he also recently attended a Louisville conference on
Lilly support of vocational discernment. Ryan is considering a number
of possible career fields from environmental education to the Episcopal
clergy.
