Internship Program basics
Minnesota Premier Publications is an award-winning company committed to community and street-level journalism. Our publications include the biweekly Southwest Journal, the biweekly Downtown Journal and the statewide monthly publications, Minnesota Good Age and Minnesota Parent.

The internship program at MPP offers college students the chance to work on these publications and gain a variety of experience, preparing for careers in journalism, graphic design and sales and marketing. Some of our interns have gone on to do great things — including becoming full-time staffers here. Applications are accepted at all times throughout the year. All internships are unpaid.

Internship requirements
A minimum time commitment of eight hours per week is required of students; 10 hours per week for interns at the Southwest Journal and Downtown Journal. Knowledge of Macs is helpful but not essential. Intern hours are flexible and can be worked around school and work schedules. Internships are unpaid and academic credit must be secured. Students must arrange for school credit through an advisor or professor.

MPP Internship Program Partners:
There are many valuable partners involved in making the MPP internship program a success. The Minnesota Newspaper Association has worked with MPP and awarded the Southwest Journal and Downtown Journal a grant for a full-time summer intern. The Pohlad Foundation has also worked with MPP in sponsoring high school interns. In addition, the colleges and universities that work to coordinate the internships and intern evaluations are also key players.

Design Internships
Graphic design interns will assist the Creative Department in the development of ads and other promotional materials, in addition to participating in brainstorming sessions and publication critiques. This is an excellent opportunity to gain real-world work experience and stellar clips for your design portfolio.

Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite in a Mac environment is important. Intern hours are flexible and can be worked around school and other work schedules.

To apply, send resume, cover letter and three to five work samples to Kathleen Stoehr at kstoehr@mnpubs.com.

Photo Internships
Photo interns at Minnesota Premier Publications will do real work that looks great on a resume and in a portfolio. Interns will gain experience shooting news as it happens, follow reporters on stories and also complete independent assignments and photo essays. There is also opportunity to photo assist professional freelance photographers.

A DSLR is required to complete your assignments. We will provide a space for you in-house, as well as a Mac computer, CS4 software and Lightroom. All photographic assignments, like the news, are time sensitive but we will only assign those that fit within your schedule. Must be working toward college credit; this is a non-paid position.

To apply, please send your resume and internship requirements to Kathleen Stoehr at kstoehr@mnpubs.com.

Regarding the internships: Photographer would be following news stories. Graphics intern would no doubt begin working on a new ad campaign for Camp Fair 2011 or our Education Fair as well as materials associated with our 20 year anniversary and also converting maps created in Illustrator into InDesign products, learn page layout and other misc real world needs.

In any case, I could use some help. Also looking (potentially) for an illustration intern who might want to take on a project similar to the book, "The City Out My Window, 63 Views on New York" by doing something similar in tone with downtown and South Minneapolis. I am looking for someone who has an almost architectural approach to drawing. B/W only or perhaps with spot color. We currently have an artist, WACSO who typically features interiors (such as attached), so it would have to be very stylistically different and of course focus on looking from the inside out. Another idea would be to have a purely family/child focus, to be featured in Minnesota Parent and the style could be similar to WACSO's then. Student is welcome to pitch his/her own concept, too.
