HPV Vaccine

Macalester College offers the HPV vaccination for women students .  This new vaccine (Gardasil) protects women against cervical cancer & genital warts and is designed for women 26 years of age or younger.

The vaccination is given in a series of 3 shots over a 6 month period of time.  .

The cost of the vaccine is $156 per vaccination ($468 total).    Students are asked to pay for the vaccine at the time they sign up or agree to have their student account charged for the amount.  Students are encouraged to check if their family insurance covers the vaccine; if covered, they will be provided with forms to submit for reimbursement.  Unfortunately, the insurance policy offered through Macalester does not cover the vaccination.

Students may sign up for the vaccination by contacting the Health & Wellness Center in person, over the phone (651.696.6275) or via email healthservices@macalester.edu  or via mail.  The student's name, ID number and either a check for the amount or request to charge the student account should be included.

If you have already received one or more of the series, you may continue the series through Macalester Health Services. Simply provide documentation from your health care provider of any prior HPV vaccinations. Contact the Health & Wellness Centerto sign up for your next vaccination(s).

What is HPV?

HPV (human papilloma virus) causes 1 million new infections every year in the US.  Research studies have shownthat 4 types of HPV cause 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts.  These 4 viral types are included in this vaccine and it's nearly 100% effective.  For more information, see www.cdc.gov/std/hpv .  Feel free to contact Health Services with any questions you may have.
