H1N1 INFLUENZA

In 2006-2007 Macalester College engaged in the development of a response to the possibility of a widespread flu pandemic; at that time, reference was primarily made to " bird flu" or "avian flu". Macalester College has developed a plan to prepare for and manage response to a contagious disease outbreak of significant magnitude - avian or otherwise.

Key elements of the plan include:

  • Monitoring and responding to the effects of a possible pandemic on faculty, staff, students, parents, visitors, and the community
  • Determining actions related to suspending classes and other campus activities
  • Providing broad and inclusive communications to all affected parties
  • Implementing appropriate and adequate preparations
  • Supporting training and exercises
  • Initiating appropriate response actions and recovery processes should a pandemic occur

If a pandemic were to occur, the public health departments at the county and state levels will be responsible for issuing quarantine orders, directing facilities closure, providing critical information, designating key health-care facilities, and distributing anti-viral medications. This authority encompasses all private citizens, businesses, and campus operations, and the Macalester campus will work closely with the Ramsey County, Minnesota Department of Health, and the Center for Disease Control and will comply with all guidance and recommendations.
