Counseling

Macalester College is committed to promoting the personal growth and development of our students. We understand that personal support is sometimes necessary so that a student can fully participate in their educational experience. Macalester offers a range of services and resources for students that addresses their emotional health.

Students can easily and confidentially arrange for a counseling appointment by calling 651.696.6275. We offer time-limited counseling, which means that most students are seen for up to 10 sessions per academic year at no charge. Sometimes finding the most appropriate help may mean exploring resources other than those provided by the counseling staff. If so, we will offer assistance in referring you to other appropriate services and counseling resources.

Appointments are 45 minutes long and begin on the half hour. If you find that you will not be able to keep an appointment, please call to cancel at least 24 hours in advance so that the time may be used for someone else.

In addition to regularly scheduled appointments, drop-in counseling appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the following times:

     Monday & Friday, 1:30 pm
     Tuesday & Thursday, 2:30 pm & 4:30 pm
     Wednesday, 2:30 pm

When you come for your first appointment, you will be asked to fill out a Counseling Intake form. You can either complete it when you arrive, or you can print it out and fill it out ahead of time, bringing the completed form with you.

Psychiatric Services

Macalester is fortunate to be able to offer limited psychiatric services at no charge to currently enrolled students. Our psychiatric consultant is Dr. Henry Emmons, a psychiatrist who practices in the Twin Cities area. Before meeting with Dr. Emmons, students must first meet with one of our counselors who can then offer the necessary referral.

Students who require ongoing psychiatric treatment or other mental health services may obtain referrals or suggestions of area providers by talking to one of the Winton Health Service counseling staff.
