SPRING 2008 END-OF-TERM, HONORS AND AWARDS FESTIVITIES

Every spring the department has a get-together at Casa Hispana to confer department awards to underclassmen, induct graduating seniors into the Spanish-language honor society (Sigma Delta Pi), and EAT! This year's gathering was on Tuesday, May 6, and while a warm spring rain fell outside, the faculty, staff, majors, minors, and interested students attended, ate, visited, and took the opportunity to blow off some steam. We also said goodbye to those who will be leaving the college. Galo González, chair of the department, paid moving tribute to Professor Leland Guyer, who is retiring at the end of this semester. The department bade a sad farewell to Elena Gondolla, who has been with us as a Native Speaker for two years and is moving on to further her language studies in the mountains of West Virginia.

As graduating seniors face the daunting task of establishing themselves in lives of their own more than ever, we think on their contribution to the department as students, scholars, and workers. Best wishes to all of you.

Have a great summer, everyone.
