MOVIE NIGHTS AT CASA HISPANA — Thanks to everyone who made movie nights such a success this year. Movie nights are done for the semester and will kick off again in September.
NAVIDAD ET AL. The department celebrated the end of Fall 2008 semester and the coming holidays with a fiesta on December 5. Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish honor society) inductions were also conducted. Here are some pictures.
DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS Casa Hispana (196 Vernon) hosted Día de los Muertos activities on October 26. Flowers were made, paper cut, and sugar skulls decorated, and a special Ofrenda was built. Liliana Cortez from El Centro discussed the history of the holiday. Photos are here.
MACALESTER WELLNESS 5K WALK/RUN October 4 was the 6th annual Macalester 5k, a part of campus Family Weekend activities. Hispanic Studies students, staff, and faculty represented.
OMG! ICE CREAM SUNDAES! Majors, minors, student employees, students interested in Hispanic Studies, department faculty and staff kicked off the Fall 2008 semester with a get-together at Casa Hispana on the first day of classes. NATIVE SPEAKERS FOR AY 2009 — Two new native speakers will be joining the department beginning with the Fall, 2009 semester. Lucrecia Zanolli is from Entre Ríos, Argentina, and Hugo González Martínez is from Almería, Spain. They will be teaching the 100- and 200-level Spanish classes and living and programming for Casa Hispana.
NEW IN HISPANIC CULTURAL STUDIES — We welcome Alicia Muñoz as tenure-track faculty, specializing in Hispanic Cultural Studies. Alicia completed her undergraduate work at Swarthmore College and her graduate and PhD work at Cornell. Alicia is the daughter of Mexican immigrants, and is originally from East L.A.
