After Macalester

The study of history in all its variations provides valuable background for a wide range of careers, including education, law, business and international service. In addition, graduate schools are particularly interested in students from a broad-based history department like Macalester's.

  • Tsione Wolde-Michael '08 began graduate work in History at Harvard University in the fall of 2008.
  • Ian Canary-King ‘07 works for Americorps’ Admission Possible program in the Twin Cities.
  • Laura Zeccardi ‘07 is enrolled in the History Department at NYU studying Public History. 
  • Evan Mohl ’07 is a reporter for Major League Baseball in Boston, Mass.
  • Robert Martinez ’07 is a paralegal at De Novo Legal in New York City.
  • Martinus (Dirk) Langeveld '06 started a blog on political scandals called The Downfall Dictionary, which is at http://downfalldictionary.blogspot.com. He says, "It's a way to keep historically active (and build a resume point for when I can hopefully get back into a history-related job) and so far is proving a lot of fun."
  • James Coplin '06 is pursuing a Ph.D in Chinese history at the University of Minnesota on a full fellowship.
  • Dhruva Jaishankar '05 is a research assistant in foreign policy at The Brookings Institution.
  • Roland McKay ’05 went to Syria on a Fulbright scholarship and is pursuing graduate work in Middle Eastern studies.
  • Emily Skidmore ’04 attends the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign for graduate school in history. She received a presidential fellowship to support her graduate work.
  • Anthony Todd ’04 is pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, studying late 19th century U.S. history with a focus on gender and law.
  • Federico Helfgott ’03 is enrolled in the University of Michigan’s Ph.D. program in anthropology and history.
  • Ariel Jacobs, '02 was a Corps member for Teach for America in the Bronx, New York and is now teaching US history in a public high school in Manhattan.
  • Karlos Hill ’02 is a Instructor of Africana Studies and History at Luther College in Decorah Iowa.
  • Shana Redmond '02 received her Ph.D. in African American and American Studies from Yale University and is an Assistant Professor of American Studies at the University of Southern California.
  • Seth Lind ’01 is a filmmaker and public radio producer. He is currently production manager for the National Public Radio show “This American Life.”
  • David Lewis-Colman '91 is professor of History at Ramapo College in New Jersey.  His book, RACE AGAINST LIBERALISM: THE UAW AND BLACK WORKERS IN DETROIT, was published in June 2008 by the University of Illinois Press.
