In this course, we will look at a number of facets of English life, politics, and society in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In particular, we will focus on a number of major themes including the emergence of the English nation;  the struggle between royal and parliamentary authority;  the English roots of the American tradition;  and the relation of social structure, religious belief and political action.

REQUIRED BOOKS:

Christopher Haigh,  ENGLISH REFORMATIONS

Carole Levin, THE HEART AND STOMACH OF A KING

Garrett Mattingly, THE ARMADA

William Shakespeare, KING HENRY V

David Underdown, FIRE FROM HEAVEN

William Wycherley, THE COUNTRY WIFE

All of the above are available at Macalester textbooks

There will also be a number of articles on reserve or in hand-out form.

We will meet three times each week for lecture and discussion.  Although formal attendance will not be taken beyond the first week or so, regular attendance is expected and class participation will be considered in assigning grades. It is also expected (and assumed) that the reading, which may be considerable, will be done on time.  Falling behind is not the best way to go.

As indicated on the course outline, students will be expected to complete three (3) written assignments.  Completing all three is a requirement for passing the course.  The three papers are due October 4, November 7, and December 8.   LATE PAPERS WILL HAVE THEIR GRADES REDUCED.

Reasonable accommodations will be provided for students with physical, sensory, cognitive, learning, and psychological disabilities.  Please contact the Disability Services Office located at Macalester Health Services, 696-6275, to discuss accessing accommodations.

EXCEPT IN VERY UNUSUAL CASES, INCOMPLETES WILL NOT BE GRANTED IN THIS COURSE.
