For the past 8 months I've been coordinating a clinic in a rural area outside of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. As Clinic Coordinator/ "Jefacita"/ Administrator, I basically run a non-profit and have the responibility to make sure all goes well (clinic schedule, patients, transfers, hospitlizations, maintain chronic care programs and followup, manage American medical and non med volunteers, coomunicate and organize with American and Bolivian founders, schedule surgeries, oversee patient care.) We provide free medical care to an indegenous patient base who cannot afford nor have acess to healthcare on their own. I am also a singing member of and active volunteer with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and a member of the Board of Directors of Folsom Street Events.
My HMCS degree was integral in my career choice and volunteer activities. HMCS taught me to think critically about my community and the world at large, and instilled in me a passion for social justice. After graduating I worked for Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, taught documentary film production at Cuenca University, and wrote scripts for the Travel Channel, CourtTV, and the Discovery Channel. I went back to school in 2004 to research advertising and consumer culture. I recently defended my thesis, co-founded the AMLA Graduate Student Caucus, and am currently developing Christian Love, a documentary about men and moral values in the small, Midwestern town where I was raised.
