Employment/Internship Opportunities
There are opportunities available for students who will be juniors next year and graduate in Spring 2010; sophomores may also apply for the Goldwater and Udall Scholarships. Students must be nominated by Macalester in order to compete for any of these scholarships, and conditions of eligibility for all of them require that applicants be U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens.
1.) Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation
Macalester may nominate up to four juniors for these merit-based awards which fund graduate school in preparation for careers in government service or elsewhere in public service. Students must have a demonstrated commitment to public service, must be planning a career in public service, and must have outstanding leadership potential. At the information meetings I will provide details about the qualifications the Foundation is looking for, the application procedures, and the specifics of the competition and award. Application deadline: 1) November 5, 2008 to submit notice of Intent to Apply (form available in Academic Programs Office), 2) December 17, 2008 for application.
2.) Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program
Goldwater awards are made on the basis of merit to sophomores or juniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering. (Students who plan to study medicine are eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice.) The scholarship pays a yearly stipend to help students complete their undergraduate education. Application deadline: December 17, 2008.
3.) Morris K. Udall Scholarship Program
This program was created to encourage current sophomores and juniors to pursue careers related to environmental policy. Macalester may nominate three students who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in environmental public policy. The scholarship pays a yearly stipend to help students complete their undergraduate education. Application deadline: February 22, 2009.
4.) Beinecke Memorial Scholarship Program
Macalester may nominate one student to compete for a Beinecke scholarship. This program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to attend graduate school in the humanities, arts or social sciences. Students must demonstrate "superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise," and must have demonstrated financial need. Application deadline: February 8, 2009.
