Section 2 - Facts About Macalester College

Mission

Macalester College is committed to being a preeminent liberal arts college with an educational program known for its high standards for scholarship and its special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society.

Programs

Since its founding in 1874, Macalester has sought to be an academic institution with standards for scholarship equivalent to those of the finest colleges in the country and to emphasize high ethical standards and social concerns. The college has ties to the Presbyterian Church and is open to all faiths. Macalester students choose among 37 majors, and 30 minors in natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and fine arts. Students take advantage of a rich array of special learning opportunities including first-year courses, supervised independent study, collaborative faculty-student research, the senior honors program, and the "capstone" experience required of each senior in his or her major.

Off-campus study is often important as well. The Twin Cities area is rich in libraries, museums, and other potential research sites. State and local government, many Fortune 500 companies, and a variety of social service agencies all provide settings for off-campus study, internships, and community service.

Each semester, more than 745 students make recurring volunteer commitments and still more participate in one-time service projects. Almost half of Macalester students take part in internship programs which emphasize experiential learning and allow for career exploration.

A global perspective permeates the Macalester education. The presence of students from almost 80 countries and the growing internationalism of faculty ensures a broad perspective both in the classroom and in campus life. The college offers several majors relating to international studies and area studies, and many individual courses have international components. Many visiting speakers and special symposia focus on international topics.

In addition, more than half of Macalester graduates study overseas for at least one term during their college careers. In the past five years, study abroad has taken Macalester students to more than 45 nations including many third-world countries.

Students

Macalester College is a highly selective, residential liberal arts college. The student body is made up of approximately 1800 students representing 50 states and almost 80 countries. More than 10% of the student body are foreign nationals, reflecting the College's longstanding international character, and 12% of U.S. students are persons of color. Almost 9% of students are National Merit Scholars, and in the past decade Macalester students have won: 26 Fullbrights, 1 foreign government grants, 18 National Science Foundation Fellowships, 5 Truman Scholarships, 2 Mellon Fellowship, and 2 Rhodes Scholarships, 1 Marshall Scholarship, 4 Watson Fellowships, and 1 Goldwater Scholarship.

Students also provide a valuable and significant addition to the college's work force; student employees are found in every office and work unit of the College.

Faculty and Staff

The faculty is a distinguished group of approximately 150 full-time and 60 part-time teacher-scholars. In the past five years, they have published more than 50 books and countless articles in scholarly journals. They also have obtained several million dollars in grants to support their research and improve their teaching, and have attained national recognition for excellence in teaching in a variety of fields.

The College's 300 full-time and 65 part-time staff employees are employed in every unit of the institution, represent many diverse occupations, and support the mission and the life of the College. Many staff members have achieved significant professional recognition within their fields.
