COMPUTERS
Macalester Students, faculty, and
staff are welcome to use the computers in the HRC or to bring
in their own machines. They may connect their machines to our
network over the wireless network or plug their ethernet cable
into one of the jacks in the center of the lounge area.
You should know the basics of how
all the public computers in the HRC work. Alison will be happy
to go over things with you if you ask. If someone has a really
weird request that you don't think you can accommodate, send
them to Alison or contact the ITS helpdesk.
To change the keyboard or input method
an a Macintosh computer, click on the flag at the upper right
corner of the screen. You can then choose the keyboard form
the list. To add to the list, choose the last item "Open
international"
(a system preference) and select "input menu". Check
the language you wish to add and close. Please do not randomly
add languages. Some users may be confused with a long list of
languages we do not teach.
Therre are still a few computers
with a floppy or ZIP drive. We recommend against using this
media because it is not reliable. The best location for storing
files is NetStorage followed by a USB flash memory drive.
If an application has stopped responding
or crashed, you can force quit from the Apple Menu or with
Option + Command + Escape. (Command is the apple cloverleaf
key).
The desk computer is to be used first for HRC work and second
for personal work of the people punched in. If you're not working,
find a computer elsewhere.
