Live It Fund 2010

Twenty-one proposals from twenty-seven students were submitted containing dozens of partnering organizations and projects from St. Paul to Seattle to Cambodia. Over $120,000 were requested to pursue global citizenship in the fund’s inaugural year.

The IGC Student Council chose six projects. These projects span the world, connecting Macalester to myriad communities, near and far.

• MACALESTER WORLD CUP SOCCER CAMP
  Danny Calderon ‘11
  Calderon envisions a program that reaches out to young people and teaches them about the wider world they are a part of through soccer.
• B.R.E.A.K.I.N (Bringing Real Education to At-Risk Kids in Impoverished Neighborhoods)
  James “Flo” Zhou ‘13, Ty Hong ‘13, Stephen Peyton ‘13, Mary Pheng ‘13
  Their Project B.R.E.A.K.I.N was to support and improve the facilties and capacity of a youth center in Cambodia that brings education to the disenfranchised youth through Hip Hop culture and breakdancing.
• ¡SI SE PUEDE! THE STRUGGLE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE AMONG MIGRANT FARM WORKERS
  Marichel Mejia ‘11 Mejia interned with the United Farm Workers of America (UFW) to assist them in organizing migrant farm workers in their campaign for workers' rights.
• DAKOTA BIRTHRIGHT
  Terence Steinberg ‘11 project involved a canoe trip that invites members of all generations living in the Santee Sioux and Crow Creek Reservations of Nebraska and South Dakota to join in the voyage back to their homeland.
• DRAFTING AN AMENDMENT FOR THE BUDGET LAW IN CHINA
  Robert Woo ‘12
  Through his Live It Project, Woo organized a summit in his native China that reviews the country's budgetary law and facilitates the drafting of a new one.
• ACCESS COLLEGE
  Jonas Buck ‘13
  Buck's project will consist of an informational movie about the college application process that will be made widely available through the Internet.
