CAPE TOWN SCHOLARSHIP

Macalester and two other US colleges have created a scholarship intended to encourage black South African students to study environmental issues.

The scholarship celebrates a semester-long study abroad program, established in 2004, in which students from Macalester, Swarthmore, and Pomona Colleges attend the University of Cape Town and take courses relating to globalization and the environment. The $4,000 award will be given annually to a student at the University of Cape Town.

The first recipient is Daena d’Oliveira, a second-year student majoring in environmental and geographical science. She will be eligible to receive the scholarship each year of her studies toward a bachelor of science degree, and if she is accepted into the university’s honors program she will join the 2011 cohort of American students to participate in the Globalization and Environment program.
