swimmersSwimmers Meet with 60s Champs
On October 20, several former swimmers were back on campus for the M Club Hall of Fame banquet. During the afternoon, some of the alumni spoke with the current swimmers about the National Championship teams from the mid-1960s, and talked about how Mac had impacted and shaped their lives. They convened for nearly an hour and a half, and all seemed to have a good time.

President’s Message
mclub presidentGreetings M Clubbers and welcome to the first-ever online edition of the Megaphone!

This is an exciting time for the M Club. This fall we hosted the Fall Sports Picnic, alumni games, football tailgates, and an M Club social for volunteers at the MIAC Cross Country Championships. In addition, at our Hall of Fame banquet we honored new inductees and recognized Annie Borton (soccer and basketball) and Ted Kimble (baseball) as Athletes of the Year. Coach Don Hudson was also honored and many of his football players traveled across the country to share in the celebration.

This momentum would not be possible without our outstanding Board of Directors, the “movers and shakers” of M Club. So, I would again like to thank our former directors—Russ Goodman, Rachel Hable, Jane O’Brien, Renee Schaefer, and Steve Skjold—and welcome our new directors: Ed Freeman, May Lin Kessinich, Ellie Lewis, Jennifer Lundblad, and Ben Van Thorre. Together we will continue M Club’s success by attending competitions, bringing current and former athletes together in the name of sport and wellness, and recognizing our outstanding athletes of today and yesteryear.

The excitement can also be felt in our regional centers with Clark Wohlferd in New York City, Mike Skoien in Philadelphia, May Lin Kessinich in Chicago, and Don Olson/Ed West in Seattle working to keep M Clubbers and alums connected and engaged. In conjunction with the Alumni Board, exciting regional events are being planned, so be on the lookout for Mac the Scot, and remember, sweating can be fun!

One goal of the M Club board is to collaborate with other college organizations, including the Alumni Board and Macalester’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Our newest alliance is with the newly formed Macalester Kilt Krew, whose purpose is to get more Mac students involved in Mac sporting events. Their kick-off event at the Homecoming football game featured a tailgate party, buttons, T-shirts, and face painting, and we helped make this a success!

Lastly, I encourage you to maintain your support of the college and Macalester athletics by contributing to the Annual Fund. As you know, there will be no separate M Club fund drive this year. Instead, you are asked to combine your support for athletics and the M Club with your regular Annual Fund contribution in one great gift. It is also essential that we M Clubbers assume a sense of responsibility to the MARC. Our commitment to this facility affirms our belief that wellness, recreation, and intercollegiate athletics are all essential to who we are and to our hopes for future generations. Please “make your mark on the MARC.”

With all of this in mind I have just one more thing to share:
LET’S GO MAC!!
Steve Cox, M Club President

The M Club Hall of Fame now honors 127 former
Macalester athletes, eight coaches/administrators, and two teams.

don hudsonFormer Mac Football Coach Honored
Don Hudson, the first African American head football coach at a predominantly white college in the modern era, was honored at halftime during the football game against Colorado College on Saturday, October 6, 2007, at Macalester.

Coach Hudson became head coach at Mac in December 1971, at least three months before Ron Stratten at Portland State (March 1972) and over a year before Cass Jackson at Oberlin College (January 1973).

Coach Hudson’s family, former Macalester athletes who played for him, and other well-wishers joined in the celebration. There was a luncheon in his honor before the game.

Jay Weiner, former Star Tribune [Minneapolis] reporter, researched and wrote an article about Coach Hudson for Minnesota Monthly. read the article»

travis feezellAthletic Director’s Message
On Saturday, November 10, I had a great opportunity to view Macalester athletics. From my position on the sidelines during an extraordinary football game, I was able to see where we are, both figuratively and literally. On the football field I watched the Macalester squad display courage and an excellence that was awesome to behold. With only seconds left, the Fightin’ Scots scored to defeat Lawrence University. As the final horn sounded, you could see elation in the players’ smiles as they completed a fantastic season. You could also see students streaming out of the stands—yes, storming the field!— to congratulate the players. Parents and Mac administrators, led by President Rosenberg, stood to cheer the effort and stayed to watch the team ring the traditional victory bell. That great spectacle spoke volumes about the buzz and energy around Mac athletics.

athletic centerBut the symbolism wasn’t limited to the field. Looking toward the north end zone, I could see the remnants of a pre-game tailgate gathering sponsored by the M Club (thank you!) and the Kilt Krew, a new student organization designed to increase student support of athletic contests. They are actively building membership and providing an outlet for a burgeoning student spirit. Very cool stuff!

Across the football field, I saw a new baseball field and a new softball field taking shape. It’s hard to miss a field with a 40-foot fence!

Yes, we will have our very own version of the Macalester “Orange Monster” for baseball. More seriously, these are great fields and will provide a tremendous setting for both sports with new dugouts, new scoreboards, generally a whole new complex for those programs.

Looking past the end zone I marveled at the construction of the MARC. Words can’t do justice to what I saw and continue to see everyday! It is a marvelous structure and will serve our needs in so many ways. For those who haven’t seen it in a while, the walls are up, the roof is on, and we’re working on the brick exterior and windows in preparation for the winter season. On the interior, walls are going up and spaces being defined. And we continue to “blow life” into the building, through paint color, furniture, and other visual elements to give the space character and vitality. It’s coming together quickly … and I can’t wait.

Please visit the athletics home page to keep up to date on the progress of the MARC construction and the results of team competitions. And as always, don’t hesitate to contact me to talk about Mac athletics. I look forward to the conversation.
Sincerely,
Travis Feezell
