Labs and Facilities
Computer Classrooms
Introduction
ITS has constructed a pair of computer-based classrooms for instructional
use. Both are located on the third floor of the Humanities building.
H302 is equipped with sixteen MPC
PC systems, while H304 boasts sixteen Apple
Power Macintosh desktop systems. All computers are fully networked,
both to on-campus resources and the Internet. Both classrooms are
equipped with ceiling-mounted data projectors so that instructors
may put examples from their monitors up for the entire class to
view. Whiteboards are installed for making notes and diagrams. These
rooms have been configured in an open horseshoe design with central
discussion tables, to enhance their flexibility for instructors.
Scheduling and Access
Instructors may schedule class meetings in H302 and H304 by contacting David
Sisk, either by calling extension 6745 or via e-mail. The computer classrooms are
available on a first-come, first-served basis to College faculty and staff. These
rooms are intended for special class meetings and projects: they are not
available for use as regularly-scheduled class meeting locations.
Instructors planning to use one of the computer classrooms for the first time are
strongly encouraged to arrange for a brief introduction to the facilities. To
avoid possible problems, instructors who wish to install specialized software
should also speak with us at least a week in advance of the planned presentation.
Entry to H302 and H304 is controlled through a card-access system, operating off
of Macalester faculty and staff identification cards. Card access is granted to
Macalester faculty and staff members through the Safety and Security office. To
arrange for card access, call the Director of Security at extension 6218.
Humanities Resource Center
The Humanities Resource
Center is located in the Humanities Building, Room 115. The HRC is geared
primarily toward digital imaging, digital audio, Web design and foreign language
instructional use.
Public Access Computer Labs
There are four public-access computer labs on campus (Dupre
counts as one lab although it is two separate facilities). These labs
are generally used by students, but are open to faculty and staff
as well.
Kirk 24-hour computer lab
Located on the lower level of Kirk Residence Hall, room 012, this lab contains 17 computers -
a mixture of Apple Macintoshes and MPC PCs. The Kirk lab is equipped with a high-speed network
printer. It is staffed by student computing consultants most weekday evenings; consult
the schedules posted in the lab. Phone: x.6905. The
Kirk lab is the largest 24-hour computer facility on campus.
Library computer lab
Located on the lower level of the DeWitt Wallace Library,
this lab contains 28 computers - a mixture
of Apple Power Macintoshes, Apple iMacs and OmniTech PCs. The Library
lab boasts a high-speed Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5si printer.
The Library lab is staffed by student computing consultants
and managed by Library staff.
During the academic year, the lab's normal hours of operation
are the same as those of the Library itself, with the exception
that the lab
closes half an hour prior to the the rest of the building. Phone: x.6538.
Normal lab hours are posted on the Library Lab's Web page, http://www.macalester.edu/library/lab/index.html.
Hours are extended during "crunch" times (around midterms and final
exams).
Library Imaging Annex
The Imaging Annex is intended to assist Macalester faculty, staff and students
who are creating Web pages or manipulating graphics for Web publication. The
Annex is a limited-use facility: it is not a general-purpose computer lab, but it
is open to all members of the Macalester community. This facility is located in
Room 205, and houses 2 each Apple Power Macintoshes and MPC PCs,
substantially augmented and upgraded for use as high-end graphics/scanning/Web
design workstations. Two of the computers (one each Mac and PC) are connected to
flatbed scanners; these workstations also have some scanning and
photo-manipulation software installed. The Imaging Annex is open for limited
hours (staffed by student consultants) and by appointment (with Library staff).
Current hours are posted in the Library and on the Library lab's home page.
Kagin computer lab
Located on the lower level of Kagin Commons, this lab contains 14 computers - 10 MPC PCs and
4 Apple iMacs. The Kagin
lab boasts a high-speed Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer. This facility is managed
by the Career Development Center.
Tentative hours for the Kagin lab during Fall semester 2004 are as follows:
Monday - Thursday: 8:00 AM to 1:00 AM
Friday: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Saturday: 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM
Sunday: 12:00 noon to 1:00 AM
These hours may change depending on staffing. The Kagin lab is closed over winter
and summer breaks, and runs under reduced hours during fall and spring breaks. Phone: x.6993.
Dupre computer labs
There are two computer labs in Dupre residence hall, located in rooms
253 and 353, near the central stairwells. Both labs contain 6
computers - a mixture of Apple Power Macintoshes, Apple iMacs and
MPC PCs. Each lab has a networked Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4Mplus
laserprinter. These labs are open 24 hours a day and are partially
staffed by student computing consultants. This lab is managed by staff
from the Office of
Residential Life. Student consultants for the Dupre labs are hired
by Res Life. Phone: 253, x.8207; 353, x.8208.
Departmental Computer Labs
Many of Macalester's academic departments maintain their own
computer facilities. These facilities may range from one or two
machines up through multiple-workstation lab/classrooms. Each
facility typically contains discipline-specific software and hardware,
geared toward the unique needs and scholarly focus of the host
department.
Departmental computer labs are administered solely by the respective
academic departments, not by ITS. For this reason, each departmental
lab is likely to have its own specific policies concerning access,
staffing and supervision. For more information on departmental
computer labs, please consult the sponsoring department. Following
is a list of the departments on campus known to maintain computer
labs, with links to the departmental home pages wherever possible.
