12/6/2001 Going to be away?

Before leaving for your holiday break, be sure to record a new voice mail greeting to alert callers of your status. If you record an extended absence greeting, when you return to your office you simply delete it and your regular greeting returns. To record an extended absence greeting: access your voice mail box, press 4, then 3, then 2 and follow the prompts. If you are going to be away for an extended period and don’t want your voice mail box to accept messages, you must record an extended absence greeting and call Telecommunications at x6566. 12/6/2001 The deadline looms
All applications for new and recycled computers from the Microcomputer Fund must be returned to David Sisk before Friday, Dec. 14. Call David at x6745 if you wish to have application materials sent to you, or get them on the Web at http://www.macalester.edu/cit/general/funding.html. This is the second round of the 2001–02 Fund: decisions will be made and communicated in late January or early February. The first round of the 2002–03 Fund will take place in Spring 2002. 12/6/2001 Time to spruce up your inbox
Our e-mail service works much more efficiently if you periodically remove old e-mail messages from your inbox. On the new mail server, the inbox is stored in a different place than messages that you have saved into other folders, and we have a limited amount of room for inboxes. Running out of space for inboxes means no new messages can be received and it can make the mail server crash. Large inboxes also slow the performance of Mulberry and other mail clients. We will begin sending out notices soon to people who are storing a large volume of messages in their e-mail inbox, asking them to delete the messages or save them to another folder. If you receive a notice about the size of your inbox and you are using Eudora or another POP mail client, check to make sure that your e-mail client isn’t set to leave messages on the server. If it is, you should log on to the server periodically through Mulberry or Silkymail to manage the messages left there. We have a large amount of space for mail folders other than inboxes, and currently have no limit on the amount of mail you can store. Contact the Help Desk at x6525 if you need assistance with these tasks. [Bulletin]

Some of us have participated in the current beta test of WebCT, a similar product. Prometheus may provide advantages—come and help us decide! Details available from Michael Nelson or Joel Clemmer. 12/04/2001, URGENT VIRUS ALERT

To all Windows users:

There is a new destructive virus called Goner, also known as W32/Goner@MM, Pentagone, or Gone. This virus spreads through Microsoft Outlook email and ICQ instant messaging programs. However, any Windows mail client that receives this virus can become infected if the user extracts and runs (opens) the attachment!

Here is what a message with this virus looks like:

Subject: Hi

Body: How are you ? When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you I am in a harry, I promise you will love it!

Attachment: GONE.SCR

If you receive this message, DELETE IT immediately without opening it, and notify the sender of the message that they are infected. If you suspect your computer may have become infected, please call the Help Desk at x6525 for assistance.

Goner has a DESTRUCTIVE PAYLOAD. When the attachment is opened, it will look for a variety of anti-virus, firewall and other security programs and attempt to delete them, along with ALL FILES in the same directory. This worm will also place a trojan, REMOTE32.INI, on the system, which contains instructions to attempt Denial-of-Service attacks on other IRC users. [Notification-L]
