08/23/02, Academic is Back Up
The Academic server is up again [editor's note: total downtime was 1 hour 40 minutes]. Also, the Admin server was down this morning from 6:30 AM until 7:20 AM. E-mail was inaccessible during this time. [Notification-L]

08/23/02, Academic Server Down
The academic server has been down since about 8:00 AM this morning. The network staff is working to get it running again as quickly as possible. An update will be sent out when the problem is solved. [Notification-L]

08/23/02, Reminder: Support Changes Effective September 1
As first announced in December 2001, all support for Corel WordPerfect, Corel Paradox, Adobe PageMill and Adobe PageMaker will end on Sept. 1. These applications will be removed from the file servers and will no longer run from the Novell Application Launcher. 08/22/02, Student Passwords to be Reset
On the morning of Tuesday, August 27, all student e-mail/network passwords will be reset to their original values. In almost every case, this value is your Social Security number. If you would like to change your password to another value after it is reset, you can do so from any campus-networked computer.

08/21/02, Office XP Service Pack 2 Released
Service Pack 2 has been released for Microsoft Office XP. This service pack includes many bug fixes, and is highly recommended.

Just run the 'Office XP Pro Install' icon in your Novell Application launcher to apply the service pack. It will update your installation of Office XP to Service Pack 2 if you already have Office XP installed. It will also perform a new install on systems without Office XP. [Notification-L]

08/17/02, Horrible. Just Horrible.
On Saturday, August 17, a critical component of our disk storage system failed. This caused the following servers to fail: Admin, Academic, Web, Crash and Helpline. These servers failing caused the following services (among others, these are the big ones) to become unavailable: e-mail, webmail, the Macalester Web site, network files and printing, Corporate Time.

Thankfully, our vendor for the failed product is local. We were able to get the new part pretty quickly.

Everything should be back to normal now. Even though this happened on a Saturday, which I am not crazy about, at least it happened now and not in September! [Notification-L]

08/16/02, Network Downtime This Afternoon
The network, e-mail, and CARS will be down this afternoon, Friday, August 16, starting at 12:30 PM. It should be back up by 2:30 PM. We need to shut everything down to complete installation of a new fire suppression system in the computer room. [Notification-L]

08/14/02, More Computer/Network Downtime
All the central computer systems will need to be shut down on the afternoon of Friday, August 16 from 12:30 PM until about 2:30 PM, while installation of a new fire suppression system in the computer room is completed. 08/08/02, Humanities Network Downtime Scheduled
The network in the Humanities building will be down the morning of Monday, August 12, from 7:00 AM until approximately 8:00 AM while the networking equipment in the building is upgraded. [Notification-L]

08/03/02, E-Mail Server Outage
On Saturday, August 3, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, the e-mail server was taken down for some maintenance (an additional SCSI card was added). [Notification-L]
