Announcements from the Bulletin, Today, Notification-L

5/31/2002 Summer hours web page
A listing of summer hours for the Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center, Library and other services is available on the Macalester Web site. Click on the “Summer Facility Hours” link on the Macalester home page. Please send additions and corrections for this page via e-mail to webmaster@macalester.edu.[Bulletin]

5/31/2002 E-mail etiquette
There is no Emily Post for the cyberworld but there is good old common sense and civility. See www.macalester.edu/cit/announce/expired/121099etiquette.html for guidance. [Bulletin]

5/31/2002 Laptop loaner pool
CIT maintains a limited number of loaner laptops that may come in handy this time of year. These are for faculty and staff use only. Call the Help Desk at x6525 for details. [Bulletin]

5/31/2002 Going to be away?
Staff and faculty voicemail boxes hold only 15 new and archived messages (with few exceptions). When a box is full, the caller does not hear your greeting, only an automated voice telling them that the box is full. To reduce the frequency of full mailboxes during the summer, there are two options; block messages from being left, or increase the number of messages your voice mail box can hold.
• To block messages: An extended absence greeting must be recorded, and Telecommunications must be notified of the extension, departure date and return date. The notification can be made in person at Humanities 316, by phone at x6566 or e-mail at borke@macalester.edu.
• To increase number of messages: Again, record an extended absence greeting alerting callers to your summer status; then call Telecommunications and request an increase of your message capacity during your time away.
• To record an extended absence greeting: Access your voice mail box; press 4 (personal options); press 3 (greetings); press 2 (extended absence greeting); follow prompts. Department coordinators and chairs are especially urged to do this so that incoming faculty and staff are not left confused and needlessly frustrated. If you have any questions, please call Telecommunications at x6566. [Bulletin]

5/31/2002 Microcomputer Fund
Decisions have been made for the first round of the 2002–03 Microcomputer Fund. Letters will be sent to all applicants. Purchases of new equipment will begin after June 1. If you have been awarded a new system, you do not have to do anything to initiate the purchase. We will work to deliver all Microcomputer Fund gear before classes begin in September. We cannot accommodate requests to move any particular delivery to “the top of the list.” [Bulletin]

5/31/2002 Summer switchboard hours
Switchboard hours between May 20 and Aug. 16 will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays. [Bulletin]

5/31/2002 New media reserve policy
Next autumn, Media Services will follow a new procedure to reserve media titles. Because of increased requests to put videos, DVDs and laserdiscs on reserve, we need more lead time from patrons. Many titles are shared by a number of professors over the semester, so reservations should be placed well in advance in order to coordinate these multiple uses. Media Services needs to receive reserve requests by Aug. 23 in order to retrieve and place programs on reserve by the start of classes. Faculty may continue to e-mail their requests or course syllabi to Kristi Wheeler, wheeler@macalester.edu or use the new faculty reserve request form at www.macalester.edu/mediaservices/. [Bulletin]

The deadline for responding to the proposed journal cancellations is Friday, May 17. The list of journals being proposed for cancellation or being switched from print to online only is available at www.macalester.edu/library/#news. 05/15/2002, Server Outage
The Academic Server will be taken down tomorrow morning (Thursday, May 16) at 7:00 AM for some maintenance. It will be up no later than 8:00 AM. Most likely, it will be up by 7:30 AM or so.

This is scheduled maintenance, unlike this morning's outage of the Admin server, which was an unpleasant suprise for us too. The Admin server also handles authentication for the email server, and printing, so those services weren't working while we were coaxing the Admin server back up. [Notification-L]

05/09/2002, New Faculty Colleague?
If your department is hiring to a tenure-track position, s/he will have startup funds. The new person's office computer should be purchased from startup. Please have your newly-hired faculty contact David Sisk in CIT as soon as possible after signing the contract to discuss needs and options.

If your department is hiring to a non-tenure-track position, please apply to the first round of the 2002-2003 Microcomputer Fund to secure a computer for this incoming faculty member. Forms and details are on the Web at this URL: http://www.macalester.edu/cit/general/funding.html or contact David and they'll be sent directly to you. If you don't yet know the incoming person's platform preference - Mac or PC? - please say so on the application form.

Please do not wait until your new colleague is on campus and preparing to teach, then call CIT and say "we need a computer for Prof. X." [Bulletin]

05/09/2002, New Copyright Service Available!
The library is pleased to offer a pilot program where reserves staff will seek to obtain permission to use copyrighted materials which exceed "Fair Use" guidelines for course reserves. Items considered to be exceeding the limits include: more than one chapter from a book, more than one article from a journal issue, any reprinted or photocopied material which has been used by the same instructor in any previous term.

Because of limited resources, use of the copyright permissions service will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Library staff need to receive the requests at least six weeks before the material is to be read by students. Please use the electronic submission form at http://www.macalester.edu/library/forms/permissions.html. Please call Janet Sietmann at x6545 (or sietmann@macalester.edu for more information.
